A Literary Oasis in a Former Theater
Recently, the prestigious newspaper The Guardian included El Ateneo bookstore in its list of the most beautiful bookstores in the world, securing the third spot. This is a testament to this Buenos Aires gem's enchanting atmosphere and unique character.
Part of the local El Ateneo chain, this bookstore is undeniably stunning. Housed in a former theater, it's a captivating blend of old-world charm and literary haven. Since 2000, when El Ateneo transformed the space into a bookstore, it has become a beloved local spot and a major tourist attraction, welcoming nearly 3,000 visitors daily.
With over 120,000 titles lining its shelves, a café occupying the former stage, and the opportunity to relax and read on the theater's balconies, El Ateneo offers a truly unique experience. No wonder this bookstore has become an iconic part of the city's fabric.
